Ohio State Politics

Ohio has two senators and 16 representatives as required by the constitution in the United

States. Every state has to elect two senators every six years regardless of the size. Ohio has two

senators, namely, Sherrod Brown, a senior senator, and a democrat, since 2007, and Robert

Portman, a junior senator who has been a republican since 2011 ("Ohio Senators, Representatives,

and Congressional District Maps - GovTrack.us," 2021). The U.S. has 435 districts headed by

representatives, also known as congressmen or congresswomen. Ohio State has 16 representatives,

but this essay focuses on Bill Johnson, the 6th district representative and has been a republican

since 2011.

Sherrod Brown is an American politician born on 9 November 1952 in Mansfield, Ohio.

He joined eagle scouts in 1967. In matters concerning education, Brown studied for a bachelor of

arts in Russian studies and received his degree from Yale in 1974. He began his political career

while in Davenport college as he campaigned for George McGovern for the presidential election

in 1972. However, he proceeded to further his studies instead of venturing into politics and got a

master's in public administration and education from Ohio State University. In 1979, he began

teaching at the Mansfield campus of Ohio State University and retained the position to 1981.

His political career began while still in college when he was recruited by a democrat to run

for the Ohio statehouse. He served as a state rep from 1974 to 1982 and was the youngest leader

in that body. He serves as the senator in the U.S. from Ohio, a seat he secured in 2007. Brown is a

democrat and a former congressman of the 13th district in Ohio. He served as a representative from

1993 to 2007 ("Ohio Senators, Representatives, and Congressional District Maps - GovTrack.us,"

2021). Before being a representative, Brown was Ohio's 47th secretary of state from 1983 to 1991.

Brown announced his candidacy for the Ohio senate seat in October 2005, shortly after

Paul Hackett stated his interest in the seat. However, Hackett withdrew from the race, which made

Brown win the Democratic party nomination by 78.05% of the votes, while Merrill Keiser, his

opponent, got 21.95% ("Ohio Senators, Representatives, and Congressional District Maps -

GovTrack.us," 2021). Brown proceeded to win the senate election on 7 November 2006 by 56%

against DeWine, who got 44% of the votes.

Brown ran for reelection again in 2012 against an opponent, josh Mandel who had won

against the incumbent state treasurer in 2010 ("Ohio Senators, Representatives, and Congressional

District Maps - GovTrack.us," 2021). Brown campaigned with Martin Sheen, a West Wing actor,

in May 2012, and managed to retain his seat on November the same year, winning by 50.7% votes

while his opponent, Mandel, got 44.7% of the votes and Scott Rupert, an independent candidate,

gained 4.6% of the votes cast.

Some of Brown's policy issues include Agriculture since he was among the seven senators

who signed a letter urging the agricultural department to enact the 2018 Farm Bill, conservation

measures. The economy is the other policy issue addressed by the senator (Brown et al., 2020). He

was among the six senators who signed a Federal Trade Commission letter requesting the use of

rulemaking authority to remove clauses driving the economy against employees, such as non-

compete clauses, limiting workers' capacity to find alternative jobs.

Robert Portman is the junior senator for Ohio State. He was born in Ohio in 1955. Growing

up, he went to Cincinnati School and graduated in 1974. He later went to Dartmouth College,

where he learned about right-wing politics and majored in anthropology, and In 1978, he graduated

with a bachelor of arts. Portman worked on Gradison's congressional campaign in Cincinnati, and

later Gradison Became his political mentor. In 1984, Portman graduated from Michigan law school
