Gel Electrophoresis
Method
DNA extracted from a sample
Endonucleases cut DNA into smaller fragments
Fragments are loaded into wells in an agarose gel covered in a buffer solution
A charge is passed through the gel
DNA is negatively charged so is drawn towards the positive charge
Larger fragments are heavier so move more slowly
Form invisible bands which are revealed by radioactive or fluorescent probes which
attach to the modified bases
Bands are read and analysed by a computer
