DNA Profiling
Short Tandem Repeats
Also called microsatellites
Non-coding nucleotide sequence
2-6 base pairs long
Repeat many times over
Equivalent sequences in different people vary considerably in the number of repeats
Profiling
DNA contains a variable number of short tandem repeats which are unique to each
individual
DNA profiling isolates and focuses on short tandem repeats instead of analysing an
entire genome
Fragments containing short tandem repeats are amplified using PCR and separated by
gel electrophoresis
Resulting bands from suspects are then compared and matched to the sample
