 DNA contains a variable number of short tandem repeats which are unique to each
individual
 DNA profiling isolates and focuses on short tandem repeats instead of analysing an
entire genome
 Fragments containing short tandem repeats are amplified using PCR and separated by
gel electrophoresis
 Resulting bands from suspects are then compared and matched to the sample
