Why do we need food?
Need it for nutrients
Energy needs to be provided
What is a nutrient?
Compounds in food essential for life and health
Types of Nutrients:
Macronutrients
o Carbohydrates – Energy, Spare Protein and facilitate absorption of calcium.
o Proteins – Growth and Repair, Energy and Regulation of body processes
o Fats – Insulation and padding energy, Cholesterol and Cell Membrane

o Minerals
o Vitamins
o Water
Carbohydrates:
Monosaccharide
o Glucose
o Fructose
o Galactose
Disaccharide
o Amylose
o Sucrose
o Lactose
Polysaccharide
o Glycogen
o Cellulose
o Starch
Triglycerides:
Glycerol – A viscous liquid and odourless
Fatty Acid – Fats are broken down into fatty acids then absorbed into the blood.
