Concentrate On Keeping Up with
Standards
Aims
This assignment requires me to show and explain how I used different skills in a range of practical
procedures and techniques to make and assess standard solutions. I produced two titrations to work
out the concentration of solutions. Additionally, I produced colorimetry to work out the absorbance
of a solution.

Part 1- Titration
Preparation of a Standard Solution: Standard Solution
for Sodium Carbonate
Aims for Part 1

Within this assignment I learnt how to create a standard solution and for this to occur I calculated
the amount of sodium carbonate needed to make a standard solution. Sodium carbonate is a
primary standard and it is pure and stable.

Calculation-

Sodium Carbonate (Na2CO3)

Before conducting the titration, standard solution was made. 250cm 3 of solution which has a
concentration of 0.05mol/ dm3, was used to work out how many grams of Na 2CO3 were used via this
calculation-

1. Concentration = Moles/ Volume x 1000
- Moles = Mass/ Mr

2. Mass = 1.26g
- Moles = 1.26/ 106 = 0.01188679  0.011 moles
- Concentration = 0.011/ (250/ 1000(= 0.25)) = 0.044 moles/ dm 3

3. Volume = 250cm3 = 0.25dm3
- 1.26g Sodium Carbonate is required

, Equipment

- Distilled Water
- Funnel
- Weighing Boat
- Balance to 2dp (provides results to be accurate)
- Sodium Carbonate
- Volumetric Flask
- Glass Stirring Rod
- Beaker

Method

The weighing scale was calibrated to then proceed with. The weighing scale was started with zero.
Approximately 1.25g and 1.45g of anhydrous sodium carbonate was weighed onto a weighing boat,
then recording the mass of the sodium carbonate it was 1.26g. The sodium carbonate was
transferred to a 250cm3 beaker. 150cm3 of distilled water was transferred to the beaker and to
dissolve the sodium carbonate, a stirring rod was used. The solution was transferred into a
volumetric flask using a funnel to accurately transfer it without any spillages. With the use of more
