Assessment 1
Recording and Production
My aim was to record an entire music track from start to end. I changed from my original idea of a
production of my own to using the “Max B Ft French Montana - Cake Remix (Instrumental)” .The way the
song is structured it seems like the project is hers and I am just a feature from a listener's perspective.
The singer's vocals were recorded in the newly tted university studio. I experimented with the
microphones the university had in the media store and this resulted in me selecting the sE Electronic 2200 Large
diaphragm condenser mic. The sE Electronic 2200 has a high pass frequency setting which rolls off all the low
frequencies which are not required for my recording. I selected the sE Electronic 2200 in reference to Practical
Recording Techniques (Bartlett and Bartlett Focal Press Practical Recording Techniques) which states the traits
of the condenser microphones have a: “wide, smooth frequency response, detailed sound, extended highs, omni
type has excellent low-frequency response, transients attack sound sharp and clear, preferred for acoustic
instrumentals, cymbals, study vocals and can be miniaturised”(2008, p82), so having all the right qualities I
required for my recording. The sE Electronic 2200 is a unidirectional cardioid microphone which is necessary
because I only want the sounds directly in front of the microphone which will come from the vocalist.
The room acoustics are usually ne in the recording room at the university but just to
make sure I faced the microphone away from the window which can act as a re ective surface.
The sE Electronic 2200 polar pattern is unidirectional cardioid which means it is not too
responsive to sounds hitting the back of the microphone which also helps with the reduction of
reverb.
The sE Electronic 2200 requires Phantom power which comes from the
mixing console. The patch bay is required to connect for the signal to ow. The music
studio microphones to the M-Audio Octane Microphone Inputs via the green patch cable.
I also removed all the unnecessary equipment to the session out of the recording
live booth such as the drums kit because when I clapped my hands with the drum kit in the
live booth there was a sound interference because the sound waves were hitting the drum
kit causing the interference.
I also carried out some recording in my bedroom because I ran out of studio time and it gave me a
professional reason to use my ONE created by Apogee. “ONE is a pocket-sized USB microphone and music
interface featuring the award winning sound quality that made Apogee Electronics famous.” The rap vocals
were recorded using the ONE at my student accommodation.
