MACBETH QUOTES

SUPERNATURAL:
● The three witches are presented as symbols of the supernatural
● The supernatural forcing Macbeth to do evil deeds
● The supernatural is shown through hallucinations -Guilt
● The supernatural mislead Macbeth to his downfall

QUOTES:
● “Fair is foul and foul is fair” - Witches
- This makes them seem strange as it shows that they are chanting.
- The jacobean audience would fear the witches as they were
strong believers in witches including king james I.
- The deception foreshadows the plot
- “Foul” foreshadows Macbeth's tyranny
● “ is this a dagger which i see before me”-Macbeth
- The supernatural is cornering Macbeth into murdering Duncan.
- Dagger told him not only to kill but to kill a king which would
cause shock to jacobean society as kings were protected under
the divine right of kings.
- Presented as a powerful control over macbeth
● “Out, damned spot!Out i say”-lady macbeth
- The adjective “damned”suggests that she will forever be
subjected to eternal punishment for her actions
- Ironic as she called upon the supernatural “ unsex me here”
And now she is being punished by it.
- Jacobean audiences would see this as a punishment from
God and the verb “out” reflects the audience views on the supernatural
as they want it gone
- the phrase “i say” implies that she is desperate compared to the
Omnipotent supernatural
● “ none of woman born shall harm Macbeth”- Witches (apparitions)
- Builds Macbeth's confidence as he doesnt think of it as remotely
possible- he takes it literally but the audience knows that there is
a deeper meaning.
- Dramatic irony audience knows that macbeth will die as the flag
outside the theatre would show that it is a tragedy
- Paradox
