,AIMS
This presentation will be covering the following areas surrounding the
teaching of modern foreign languages.
 Why teach Modern Foreign Language (MFL) with a stimulus.
 The use of a resource for MFL with links to the national curriculum and
frameworks alongside cross-curricular links.
 The learning sequence for MFL.
 Outline of a MFL lesson with the use of the resource and links to theory.
 A look on international and global focus on MFL.

, WHY TEACH MFL AS A
STIMULUS
We should teach MFL as a stimulus to make learning a new language fun an
enjoyable to help engage the children and make them excited by learning a
new language that opens the door to different cultures and lives outside of
what the children know, “Language is a primary element of culture” (Drisco
and Frost, 1999, p.16).
Piaget’s theory of cognitive development introduces the idea of schemas to
help support children in developing on knowledge and learning, “Piaget
believed that creating schemas is not a passive process, but one that
involves active engagement and is dynamic” (Doherty and Hughes, 2009,
p.253). Teaching MFL as an exciting and enjoyable learning experience and
with the support of Piaget’s cognitive development theory children are
exposed to positive learning which encourages children to be active learne
and take part in their learning, allowing for the chance for children to be
exposed to the world around them through languages.
