• The rst Surah in the Qur’an which we recite in everyday in every single rak’ah of prayer,
in fact when reading in prayer its not just a Surah, but a conversation with Allah. It is
crucial that we can properly recite it and understand it - even if its a basic
understanding.
• Widely accepted to have been revealed in Makkah, but some do claim Madinah
• Consists of 7 verses split into 3 groups:
- Verses 1-3 praise and glorify Allah
- Verse 4 establishes our relationship with Allah and the nature of that relationship
- Verses 5-7 seek the help of Allah and his guidance
Names - [This Surah has been given approx. 35 names by Scholars, some from the Prophet SAW]
The Opening :• الفاتحة
ال صالة ملن لم يقرأ بفاتحة الكتاب-
‘There is no prayer for the one who does not read the Opening of the Book.’
[Bukhari & Muslim]
The Mother of the Qur’an :• أم القرآن
The Mother of the Book :• أم الكتاب
ِ كل صالة لم يقرأ فيها بأم القرآن فهي-
خداج
‘Every prayer which doesn’t have the Mother of the Book recited within, it is premature.’
[Muslim]
أن النبي قال ألم القرآن هي أم القرآن وهي السبع املثاني وهي القرآن العظيم -
‘The chapter commencing with, “All praises and thanks are due to Allah the Lord of the
Worlds” is the Mother of the Quran, the Mother of the Book, the Seven Oft-Repeated
Verses and the Great Quran.’

: وقال بن َجرير الطَّبَراني-
It was named so because it is a summary of the entire Qur’an.
The Arabs named anything that concisely summarised something (or comprised of its
most important part) ‘ ’أمMother. (In this context it can also be understood as ‘core’)
The Praise :• الحمد
The Supplication :• الدعاء
Shows how how to structure our Duas, start o by praising Allah using some of his names
(preferably names that are relevant to your dua) then ask him for what you want and if you
can tell him what would happen if your dua is not accepted.
The Treasure :• الكنز

The Prophet SAW was once asked regarding the Surah and he replied that “Verily, it was
revealed from treasure underneath the throne.

Gratitude :• الشكر
Lexically الحمدencompasses gratitude ‘ ’شكرand praise ‘'أثنا.
Cure : • الشفاء
فاتحة الكتاب شفاء من كل سم-
‘Al Fatihah is a cure for every poison.’

The Su cient :• الشافية
The Perfect/Complete :• الوافية
The Prayer :• الصالة

‘ I have divided prayer between myself and my servant into two halves…’

Its recitation is a requirement for the validity of Salaah.
The Seven Repeated Verses:• سبع املثاني
أن النبي قال ألم القرآن هي أم القرآن وهي السبع املثاني وهي القرآن العظيم-
‘The chapter commencing with, “All praises and thanks are due to Allah the Lord of the
Worlds” is the Mother of the Quran, the Mother of the Book, the Seven Oft-Repeated
Verses and the Great Quran.’

The Foundation of the Qur’an :• أَساس القرآن
وأساس القرآن فاتحة، أساس ال ُكتُب القرآن: سمعت عبد اهلل بن عباس يقول: قال الشعبي -
وأساس الفاتحة ” بسم اهلل الرحمن الرحيم ” فإذا اعتللت أو اشتكيت فعليك باألساس تشف، الكتاب
بإذن اهلل تعالى
‘The foundation of books is the Quran, The foundation of the Quran is the opening of the
book (al- Fatihah), the crux of al-Fatihah is بسم اهلل الرحمان الرحيم، so if you’re in icted with
illness or complaint then it is upon you to seek a cure and you will be cured by the
permission of Allah.’
