Unit 2A
Quantitative analysis: Standardisation of Hydrochloric acid.
Aim:
To standardise a solution of HCl using a primary standard, anhydrous sodium carbonate.
Apparatus:
 50cm3 burette, with stand, clamp and white tile
 25cm3 pipette and pipette filler
 Two 250cm3 conical flasks, weighing boat
 Two beakers and a glass rod or stirrer
 Methyl orange indicator solution
 Distilled wash bottle
 Sodium carbonate solid
 Unknown concentration HCl
 Funnel
 250cm3 volumetric flask.

Risk Assessment:
I carried out a risk assessment. I used goggles to protect my eyes against hydrochloric acid
and sodium carbonate, both of which are irritants. I handled all the equipment with care
and caution.

Method:
1. I weighed a clean dry weighing boat.

2. I placed the weighing boat on the pan of a digital balance and using a
spatula placed approximately 1.3 grams of sodium carbonate into the
weighing boat.
3. I weighed the weighing boat and its contents accurately and recorded the
precise mass
4. I poured the contents of the weighing boat into a beaker and used
distilled water to rinse any traces of sodium carbonate from the weighing
boat into the beaker.

5. I added approximately 100cm3 of distilled water to the beaker containing
the sodium carbonate and using a glass rod I stirred the contents of the
beaker until it had dissolved.

6. Using a funnel, I poured the contents of the beaker into a 250cm 3
volumetric flask and then using the washing bottle rinsed the beaker into
the same volumetric flask. I rinsed the glass rod into the washings.
7. I filled the volumetric flask up to the graduated mark by carefully adding
distilled water. I made sure I was careful not to exceed the mark.
8. I put a stopper in the volumetric flask and shook it thoroughly to mix the
contents of the flask.
9. I calculated the exact mol dm-3c of my sodium carbonate solution quoting
the value to the appropriate precision.
10. I washed the burette with water and clamped it onto the stand, I then
filled it up with HCl. I made sure I took the funnel out of the burette
before doing a titration. I also ensured that there were no air bubbles and
the meniscus lay on the 0.0cm3 mark.
11. I cleaned the pipette first with water, blew all the water out with the filler
and dried the outside.
