In this assignment, I've written about the sociological concepts and perspectives that are used to understand health and social care. I'll also describe how these viewpoints are used to understand health and social care and how they help us comprehend society. I have additionally made an effort to analyse how sociological viewpoints have influenced how we perceive the study of health and social care.

[SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVEs] -
UNIT 10 – TASK 2

P5- EXPLAIN HOW SOCIAL INEQUALIIES AFFECT DIFFERENT GROUPS IN SOCIETY
Health care professionals should understand the various inequalities that affect the health
and wellbeing of their service users by identifying which minority groups are vulnerable to
poor health and social professionals must use their resources as effectively as possible to
provide the best care to their service users. Every day, inequality impacts a variety of social
groupings. This might be attributed to the organisations that form society, such as the
government, the church, the health-care system, and the educational system. Those
between the ages of 21 and 30, who come from lower-class backgrounds or localities, are
more likely to encounter unfairness and prejudice from institutions as a result of the labels
that society has allocated to them. (Talman 327)
The evidence that patterns of health and ill-health may seem to vary with – race or national
origin, gender, sex, age, disability, social class and sexual orientation. (Talman 327)
Race and ethnic or national origin –
The evidence between ethnicity, illness, race is proven to be difficult to study because
systematically because there is known to be problems in defining a person’s racial type,
practically because of the increase in numbers of individuals who are mixed race.
There is known to be a rise in the portion of people from the various minority ethnic groups
living in areas where there is deprivation or in cities that are associated with poor housing,
pollution, and high levels of unemployment, which is therefore difficult to understand
whether their poor health is caused by unemployment, ethnicity or poverty, nevertheless
comparing this to the white majority group ethnic group. It is known that most of the
minority groups tend to have short life expectancy compared to the others, it is also known
that most of the minority groups have higher infant mortality rate because of the high level
of poverty in these areas. (Talman 327)
There is known to be a high rate of rickets in children from Asian minority groups because of
the lack of vitamin D, it is also known that children from minority groups tend to have a
shorter life expectancy and a higher infant mortality rate. In addition to the various health
implications that may limit an Individual’s ability to access serve, language and beliefs may
also limit the full use of services, an example of this Asian women are often reluctant to see
male doctors or because they know little English, translators are not available on every
occasion. (Talman 327)
How the different social group experience inequalities –
Stereotyping – stereotypes Is the concept of prejudice which could either define a group of
people, such as immigrants or the older generation, if they share the same characteristics or
behaviour. Racial stereotypes can happen in different form, it could either be by treating a

person differently because of their background or their personality or their hair. racial
stereotyping could be linked to discrimination by race, an example can be a group of
coloured individuals talking might be frightening for other people because they think they
are always up to something bad. another example is if your skin colour hinders you from
entering a restaurant as a visitor, the individual is also unlikely to be employed there for the
same reason. (Talman 327)
Stereotyping by social class can include the difference between the upper and lower class,
it could also include the term that they used to describe the lower class as lesser individuals.
There is also stereotyping around the fact that white people are in higher class compared to
black folks. Social class stereotypes usually contribute to inequality in so many ways,
including groups of individuals, institutionalisation. (Talman 327)
Social class - social class can be explained in different terms according to the different
sociologists, because of the different perspective on the importance of class in society.
There are 4 social class systems which is lower class, working class, middles class and upper
class, even though statistics are not trusted sometimes, research shows that higher
members from a higher social class tend to live longer compared to those in the middle or
lower class, because of their access to health services and being able to afford healthier
foods. the Acheson and black report have helped to provide very detailed and reliable
explanations of the relationships being the environmental and health, social factors, and life
expectancy. in the research done in the black report, showed the different gap in the levels
of illnesses and health between the different social classes that the government of the time
suppressed its publications. the study in this report has been proven to be extremely
influential and the explanations in this report are still being used by sociologists today when
examining current issues in health. (Talman 327)
How the different social group experience inequalities –
Discrimination – the lower class are severely discriminated against because they are unable
to access health care services, they are unable to afford balanced and appropriate food that
helps their health, they are unable to access services like the upper class do. Discrimination
by race is common, because there are so many stereotypes around black or Pakistani
groups, an individual could be discriminated against based on their culture, skin colour, hair
type and beliefs. Racial discrimination happens when you are treated unfairly because of
your skin colour, ethnicity, ethnic origin, or national origin. (Talman 327)
Marginalisation – A simple definition of this is when groups of individuals are discriminated
against or are prevented from enjoying basic or equality rights to services in the society, an
example of this in social class is the lower class, being unable to access health care services
or being looked down by the higher class. This is a form of discrimination because it involves
prejudicial attitudes by treating the individual differently. (Talman 327)
Making a group or class of individuals feel less significant or demoted to a supporting role is
a general understanding of marginalisation. The exclusion of single mothers from the
welfare system prior to the welfare reform of the 1900s is an example of marginalisation on
an individual level. The modern welfare system is built on the idea that everyone has a right
