Aim:
To prepare phenyl benzoate from phenol in the laboratory.
Introduction:
Phenyl benzoate is a benzoate ester obtained by the formal condensation
of phenol with benzoic acid. It is a crystalline powder with a melting point of
68-70° C (lit.) and a boiling point of 298-299° C (lit.). Phenyl benzoate is an
organic compound which is used as a medication and insect repellent. As a
medication it is used to effectively treat scabies and lice.
Hypothesis:
The experiment will produce 2.11g of pure phenyl benzoate.

 The glass might break and can lead to cutting or injury.
 Sodium hydroxide is corrosive, can damage the skin.
 Benzoyl chloride is irritant to eyes, skin and the respiratory system if
inhaled.
 Phenol causes severe burns to the skin.

Control measures:
 Handle glassware with care so they do not break.
 Use of the following PPE:
 Wear gloves to protect the skin from burns, corrosion, irritation, and
cuts from hazards such as glassware (flasks), and harmful chemicals
(sodium hydroxide and benzoyl chloride).
 Wear safety goggles to prevent eye damage as a result of spillages or
accidentally rubbing the eyes after contact with harmful chemicals
such as sodium hydroxide.
 Wear lab coats to protect skin and clothes from possible spillages of
harmful chemicals such as sodium hydroxide and benzoyl chloride.
