How far did Italy benefit from its relationship with Germany?

1. Study Source A. What impressions does Source A give of the relationship between
Hitler and Mussolini? Explain your answer using details of the source. [6]
The impressions Source A give the relationship between Hitler and Mussolini was
deficiently not close and probably fake. Source A presents Mussolini as a victim of Hitler’s
lies and false promises. This is proven in the quote: “Mussolini privately accepted that the
Nazification of Austria was inescapable, though he mistakenly assumed that Hitler would
warn him in time to prepare the Italian public for his change of policy”. What the source is
explaining here is that Mussolini accepted Hitler’s plans because he didn’t know Hitler’s real
intentions. As I said before the source presents Mussolini as a victim to Hitler’s lies since the
source states that Hitler didn’t warn Mussolini about the change of policy which not only
casted a bad light on Hitler but also casted a bad light on Mussolini damaging his reputation
(the source tries to defend Mussolini by making him sound like a clueless leader unaware of
Hitler’s real plans). Therefore, the source makes it seem like Hitler and Mussolini’s
relationship was fake since Hitler made fake promises to Mussolini to use him and then
betray him by putting some blame on Mussolini so Hitler wouldn’t be put on the spot.
2. Study Source B. What is the cartoonist’s message? Explain your answer using details
of the source and your knowledge.[8]

The cartoonists message is that while Italian soldiers will be forced to take place in the
Abyssinian gamble (since Hitler, Goebbels and Göring are too scared), the Germans will be
encouraging “Central European Ambitions”. The cartoonist mocks Hitler, Goebbels and
Göring by presenting them as girls in large dresses and high heels. The caption also mocks
them: “The girls he left behind him”. The cartoonist shows that Hitler, Goebbels and Göring
are too scared. In the cartoon we can also see that the soldier representing the Italian army
is forced to invade Abyssinia as there is a rope attached to his leg pulling him towards the
“Abyssinian gamble”. This further proves my point the message is that Hitler, Goebbels and
Göring are forcing soldiers to do the Abyssinians gamble to carry out their true intentions.
The 3 men are also waving handkerchiefs that say: “Central European Ambitions” which
suggests that they encourage that they are saying farewell to Italy’s disruptions and hello to
their plans. Since Goebbels is there, it could suggest that “Central European Ambitions” will
be presented through propaganda, and by having Göring in the cartoon the cartoonist
shows that the Germans plans will be also done by force (since he was one of the
commanders of the SA, known for violence). The cartoonist clearly shows that the Italians
will be no longer a problem by having a skeleton drawn next to the path of the Abyssinian
Gamble.

3. Study Source C. How far are you surprised by this source? Explain your answer using
details of the source and your knowledge.[8]
