Transcription – takes place in the nucleus
The first thing that occurs is DNA helicase breaks the hydrogen bonds between the
complimentary bases and the DNA unwinds. Once they have been separated, there are free
RNA nucleotides that complimentary base pair to the template strand (that got separated
due to the DNA helicase), RNA polymerase causes this to occur. The only difference now is
that uracil binds to adenine instead of thymine. The bond between the new bases are called
hydrogen bonds.
The drawing above represents the DNA helicase breaking the hydrogen bonds of the first
DNA, then the RNA nucleotides joining to their complimentary base pairs (in pink). The new
strand in pink is called pre- mRNA. Now DNA ligase catalyses and comes to join the original
RNA strand to the one it was separated from. Now looks like this again:
