Science and Religion: Publication of the “Origin of Species'' book by Darwin and the introduction of the theory
of evolution created a conflict between religion and science. People felt like they had to choose one of the two
and viewed science as dangerous. People strongly believed they were born sinners and had to live a good life
to go to heaven, hence why they repressed many of their desires. Darwin's theory of evolution is presented in
the novella through Hyde’s primitive descriptions. This is challenging to the religious beliefs of Victorian society.
