What applies to zoos?
• Animal Welfare Act 2006
• The zoo Licensing act 1981
• Secretary of states standards of modern zoo practice
• The animal welfare (licensing of activities involving
animals) regulations 2018
• Endangered species act (eg CITES)
• Council regulation
• The welfare of animals (transport) order 2006
Zoo licensing act
• All zoos require a license and must be inspected
regularly
• Where animals are kept in enclosures, they must be
provided with a suitable environment to provide an
opportunity to express most normal behaviour
• Licensing and inspections are a matter for local
authorities
The Secretary of states standards on modern zoo practice
• Specifies the minimum standards that zoos in England
are required to meet
• Links closely to Animal welfare act 2006
• Includes transport of animals, education/conservation
measures, public Safety, stock records, euthanasia, vet
treatment, staff training, public facilities and display of
zoo license.
• All areas are discussed in further detail in the
appendices
CITES
• Aim is to ensure that the international trade in
specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten
the survival of the species.
• Appendix l - species that threatened with extinction
where trade is only permitted in exceptional
circumstances.
• Appendix lll - species not necessarily threatened with
extinction where trade needs to be controlled.
• Appendix lll - species that are protected in at least one
country where that country has asked for assistance
