BTEC Applied
Science
Structure and Bonding Refresher lesson
Atomic Structure
, 19/03/23
Unit 1 – Applications & Principles of Science
Starter
• What is the structure of an atom?
• Can you draw and fully label a suitable diagram?
• Try to add as many details as you can!
, 19/03/23
Unit 1 – Applications & Principles of Science
Learning Objectives
• Describe the different sub-atomic particles in terms of
distribution, mass and charge.
• Describe the contribution of sub-atomic particles to
atomic number and mass number.
• Explain the term ion.
• Deduce atomic structure in atoms and ions.
, 19/03/23
Unit 1 – Applications & Principles of Science
Atomic Structure
• Atoms are made up of electrons, protons and
neutrons in an overall spherical shape.
• Protons and neutrons exist in a central, very small
dense NUCLEUS.
• Electrons ORBIT the nucleus in SHELLS or ENERGY (or
QUANTUM) LEVELS, numbered 1,2,3 etc extending
outwards from the nucleus.
3
2
• Subatomic particles have 1
tiny masses so it is easier
to use relative masses.
