Medical Case 1: Kenneth Bronson Guided Reflection Questions 1. How did the scenario make you feel? The scenario made me nervous because I wasn’t sure what type of oxygen therapy he required. I was also unsure about oxygen being applied first or albuterol. I decided to go with oxygen because of ABCs. Overall, the scenario was helpful and exposed me on what to do during a patient having an allergic reaction. 2. What signs and symptoms led you to the conclusion that Kenneth Bronson was experiencing an allergic reaction? After the medication was administered through his IV, he immediately complained of not being able to breathe and that his throat felt swollen. Also, assessment showed urticarias rashes on his chest. 3. Discuss the differences between mild, moderate, and severe anaphylactic reactions. Mild anaphylactic reactions involves a runny nose, watery eyes, localized itching, congestion. Moderate reactions involves widespread itching difficulty breathing. Severe reactions or anaphylactic reactions involves itching of eyes or face, varying degrees of swelling of the mouth, throat, tongue that can make breathing and swallowing difficult, hives, abdominal pain, cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, mental confusion or dizziness. 4. Discuss the importance of follow-up assessments post-reaction. The Pt needs to be closely monitored since there is a chance of a delayed reaction. 5. What further needs does Kenneth Bronson have at the end of the scenario that future nursing care should address? Allergy to the drug class cephalosporins, smoking cessation 6. Reflect on how you would communicate with family members in an emergency situation if they were present at the bedside. I would calmly explain to the family that he is having an allergic reaction to the antibiotic given and that I have to stabilize his condition by administering an increased flow of oxygen, administering medications his provider has prescribed and monitoring his cardiac rhythm. I would ensure to explain the situation as thoroughly and truthfully as possible while remaining calm and confident.
