Building effective professional networks via social
media - LinkedIn
Lecture by Celia Rizothanasi, the Queen Bee of LinkedIn
How to build trust — stages: (both in person and online)
• First impression
• Know
• Like
• Trust
Traditional job search channels:
• Recruitment agencies
• Employers
• Job boards
• Career fairs and recruitment events
• Referrals
New job search channels:
• Social recruiting — using social channels to source, attract and engage
with candidates. Between 84% and 92% of companies do this
nowadays.
• Networking online — check the book “The long game” by Dorie Clark.
She talks about networking strategies both short-term (useful for the
present) and long-term (deeper relationships potentially beneficial in
the long term)
Employers will Google you when you are of their interest. They do that to
see if your CV is consistent with your LinkedIn and to check what you
have done in life (particularly if you have done something stupid).
Therefore, it is important to monitor your online presence at least twice a
year to make sure everything looks good. Do that in private browsing.
LinkedIn is the most popular networking app. It is like our personal
website.

Our online presence is not static.
1. Your profile — activate your presence
2. Your content — inspire your audience —> you do not necessarily have
to create your own content, you can even repost
3. Your network — nurture your network
4. Your leads — connections to employers and recruiters
Job seekers go to Facebook but recruiters go to LinkedIn —> 94% of
recruiters are on LinkedIn
Who is on LinkedIn?
• Employers
• Recruiters
• Graduates
• Independent Professionals
40% daily users: 57% are men, 43% are women
Compared to a normal CV, LinkedIn is a lot more as it has visual
elements, content, and recommendations besides your CV.
