How am I doing?
Overall, I completed a lot of research and various experiments in this unit to successfully complete
unit 2 practical scientific procedures and techniques. The skills I've learned in this unit will help me
when I apply to universities since they've given me greater independence and confidence when it
comes to doing practical work. I finished the practical in titration, chromatography, and calorimetry
while studying practical scientific procedures and techniques. This required me to apply previous
information, such as safety when doing tests, but there were still many skills I needed to gain in
order to perform the experiments independently and accurately. When I examine my performance
and skills, I've concluded that I've learned a lot of new things that will help me complete other
sections of this course. Some of the main skills I have developed are:

Observation is a skill I learned by seeing the teacher demonstrate how all the many pieces of
equipment work and are calibrated, some of which I had never seen or used before.

Communication is a key ability needed while working with peers because any information offered by
the teacher or the lab book is easily understood; this is vital for ensuring that the experiment is done
correctly in the correct order, and those accurate findings are obtained.

This talent is used when analysing any of the data or information presented.

Interpretation was also a skill used when not understanding why anything turned out the way it did
in the experiment or why the experiment turned out the way it did, so more research was directed,
and interpreting was used to line up that information found to the results from the experiment.

Many skills I learned in unit 2 will be transferred to future units, such as knowing how to use the
equipment, understanding the risks and hazards involved in experiments, identifying strengths and
weaknesses of any methods used, any variables used within an experiment, knowing how to handle
any data collection, and understanding and analysing calculations used within experiments in order
to form a conclusion. My knowledge of health and safety is a critical skill that I have developed in
detail and has been crucial throughout Unit 2.

This has proved critical in all the studies, as well as when handling chemicals that are different and
stronger than anything I've ever handled before, such as at school. They've become riskier, so being
aware of the risks and knowing how to deal with them properly has been critical. Everyone in my
class who completed the practicals, including myself and a peer, was aware of the dangers and how
to keep safe when performing any lab experiment. Another element of the experiment that raised
safety concerns was the cooling curves, which were similar to those seen while boiling water while
using it.

Furthermore, if some of the boiling water spills over, it could result in serious injury as well as a slip
hazard, thus learning about health and safety is critical when carrying out an experiment. Knowing
about these dangers and how to be safe while conducting an experiment will aid me in my future
classes.

At the beginning of the course, there were only a few skills I could complete accurately and
independently before completing any experiment in this unit these were:

Measuring distances with a ruler.

Measuring temperature using a liquid thermometer (of a solution).

 Knowing the use of PPE in experiments and its safety.
