P7- Describe best practice in promoting positive behaviour

What is considered best practice, what is best practice and what is the best practice in promoting
and improving positive behaviour? Well, I will in this task describe what best practice is and best
practice in promoting positive behaviour.

First things first, what is best practice? According to various sources, best practice is defined as
"commercial or professional procedures that are accepted or prescribed as being correct or most
effective". So what this means is that best practice is what is presumed as correct or most effective,
it is what is seen as effective. So with best practice out the way, what is described as and considered
best practice in promoting positive behaviour, what is seen as acceptable and what is done to
promote positive behaviour. Well, I will describe below, best practice in promoting and achieving
positive behaviour and what factors are considered to be best practice when promoting positive
behaviour.

Best practice in promoting positive behaviour

Knowing the individuals personal and medical history

In promoting positive behaviour, knowing the individuals personal and medical history is seen as
best practice. To promote positive behaviour, knowing the individuals personal and medical history
could be predominant. If the individual’s life and personal history are known i.e. their past, living
arrangements and family members, and medical history i.e. their previous medical history and
current medical history, then, recommendations and ideas surrounding the promotion of positive
behaviour can be made. Knowing their life story and lifestyle can be effective in promoting positive
behaviour, as knowing such information can allow positive behaviour to be encouraged and
promoted without using activities or techniques harmful to the individuals medical and personal
life.

For example, maybe an individual has a medical condition such as a physical and mobility disorder.
With such conditions, it should be known that the use of physical intervention must not be
considered or used cautiously. So, by knowing the individual’s medical history, you can know what
and what not to use regarding intervention and the promotion of positive behaviour.

Promoting the benefits to the person

Promoting and displaying the benefits of positive behaviour is seen as best practice in dealing with
challenging behaviour. If the individual who displays challenging behaviour is promoted the benefits
of positive behaviour, then they may decide to change the way they behave due to the benefits.
Benefits to choosing positive behaviour could include better academic outcome, positive future or
improved social and emotional relationships with others. But how could the benefits be promoted in
the first place? They could be promoted by using other individuals as an example, typically those
who have achieved much by behaving positively. By doing so, active encouragement can be made
towards the individual displaying challenging behaviour to change their behaviour and display
positive behaviour. Promoting the benefits to the person could also be carried out other ways such
as rewarding positive behaviour. By rewarding positive behaviour, you are showing the individual
the benefits of good behaviour, which may entice them to change. To suit the individual, the
rewards could be something they think highly of and like a lot, whether that be free time or a well-
done card.
