current culture while maintaining their culture of origin.
Cultural transmission refers to one’s culture being adopted by another
individual that is not a part of said culture. Issues for this can arise with such if
one isn’t exposed to the key parts of said culture which maybe an issue for later
generation migrants that want to still be a part of their heritage culture while
mainly being a part of the current culture of their environment. Inman et al
(2005) has touched on such previously but focused primarily on 1 st generation
migrants from an Indian background moving to America. It was found that they
tend to hold on to their old culture with a perceived rejection of the new, with
this retention being challenged by the new western values within American
society. Issues found here could be applied to later generation migrants that are
trying to hold onto their culture of origin. This further being highlighted by
Mchitarjan & Reisenzein (2013) finding retention of culture of origin is of high
importance to migrants.
This proposed study aims to highlight the issues that maybe encountered
by the later generation of migrants trying to hold on to their culture of origin
while taking on the current culture of the environment. While also finding
potential solutions to address hurdles for the highlighted issues so that they can
be applied to the general public.
The study will consist of using a sample size similar to previous studies in
this area, using 200-300 individuals that are a minimum of 3 rd generation
migrants that have an Asian heritage and living in the UK. Participants will be
