Learning Outcome 1: Understand what is required for competence in own work role
1.1 Describe the duties and responsibilities of own role
In my role as a care worker, I will have certain duties and responsibilities.
My duties are the tasks that I will perform in my daily practice, which will involve caring for
and supporting individuals with tasks that they unable to manage themselves and perhaps
teaching them new skills to increase their independence.

Ensuring individuals receive quality care in line with their wishes and preferences
Ensuring all paperwork is filled out correctly
Helping individuals learn new skills
Communicating clearly and efficiently with the individuals I support, co-workers,
managers, outside agencies etc.
Reviewing and updating care plans
Taking individuals to activities
My responsibilities will be the things that I will be accountable for in my day-to-day work. I will
have responsibilities to myself, my clients, my colleagues and managers, other professionals
and society.
Some of your responsibilities may be:
Ensuring medication is administered and documented correctly
Informing my employer of potential risks to health, safety and wellbeing
Reporting unsafe practices or suspicions of abuse
Working in accordance with legislation, best practices and my employer’s agreed
ways of working
Attending mandatory training
Respecting the privacy of the individuals that I work with
My duties and responsibilities at work are mentioned in my job description. I obtained more
detailed information during my induction and mandatory training my employer provided for
me. My employer’s agreed ways of working (policies and procedures) also provided
information about my duties and responsibilities. If I am not sure about something, I always
approach my manager for clarification.
