1. INTRODUCTION

Today learners are growing up in a fast-paced global society that in many parts is
surrounded by highly technological devices that give them access to a multitude of
information that has never been witnessed in human history. This ease of access has helped
make the world smaller and more accessible to many of its inhabitants, but with such drastic
changes to our society over a short period of time there has been growing concern for the
need to reevaluate one essential element, education. According to Coetzee and van Niekerk
(2015) teachers cannot give learners the knowledge and tools they used yesterday to solve
the problems of tomorrow. It has become evident that learners are waiting for school
curriculum and teachers to catch up to the 21 st century and start accommodating their new
learning styles (Jacobs, 2010). A new societal and educational landscape has been formed
and although it may be difficult for some to accept such radical changes, it is our duty as
teachers to guide learners towards effectively navigating this new terrain with competence
and confidence.

21st century education is fundamentally a response to the revolutionary shifts currently
happening in our society, economic and technological sectors. It requires a complete 360°
