THE COURSE PLAN

Name of the Teacher Name of the Student Level of the
student
Melenta Solomon Alberto Mozo Minguez B1 Intermediate

Syllabus Type:
Multi Syllabus

, Course Aims:
By the end of the course, the student will be better able to…
• Better able to converse with his English-speaking friends for social engagements or his
colleagues in work related situations.
• Speak more fluently and accurately on chosen topics, with better pronunciation.
• Have an improvement in his listening, speaking and pronunciation of the English language.

Course Rationale: (700 – 1000 words)

I have chosen to use the multi-syllabus as it based on a combination of topics and skills that best suit
the requirements of the student. Alberto will benefit from this the most and will be able to improve
his listening and speaking skills as he is confident in writing, due to his past learning experiences. This
syllabus will meet his needs and help him to progress in the English language with the incorporation
of various authentic materials and fun activities that will be based on his personal topic choices. At
the end of his 5 one-hour lesson he will be able to listen and speak conversationally, with improved
accuracy, fluency, and pronunciation. Alberto’s motivation is intrinsic thus he will be very enthusiastic
to complete the course.
The topics sport, science, current affairs were used during the 5 lessons as these were the student’s
preference. This should help the student to participate and enjoy the lessons and encourage him to
complete all activities and homework given to him so that he can achieve his desired skill sets in the
English language.
Alberto mentioned that he needs to concentrate on his technical vocabulary, speaking and listening
skills, so the target language was selected based on lesson topics which enables a variation of lexis to
be introduced. The two skill sets used in my lessons are receptive (listening) and productive
(speaking) and has been structured to improve Alberto’s speaking as well as the sub-skills of listening
for gist and detail, fluency, accuracy, and pronunciation, as indicated in his needs analysis.
The first lesson is to engage Alberto using conversational English about Sport using questions to elicit
answers on which sport interests him. This will allow course aims to be met and will ensure that the
student will be more at ease while gaining confidence. Target vocabulary is then introduced where
meaning, form and pronunciation is taught. To encourage his conversational skills, Alberto will give a
short talk on the sport using the new vocabulary he learnt. Revies and feedback is given at the end of
the lesson, to ensure minimal disruptions during the lesson. A worksheet will be given at the end of
the lesson as homework for Alberto to practice pronunciation and to further learn and show his
understanding of the target vocabulary.

The second lesson also focuses on speaking practice where the lesson structure is based
on the context of science. More complex words are introduced as target language with increased
focus on meaning, form, and pronunciation. A YouTube video will be used for more practice in
identifying the target language and improving listening skills. A fill in the blank’s worksheet will be
given to Alberto to complete by filling in the correct word that is missing from the sentence. A
discussion with the teacher is then conducted which will increase his language skills and develop his
conversation skills, fluency, accuracy, and pronunciation. For homework Alberto will receive a
worksheet that requires him to unscramble the letters to form the target words in the block.

The third lesson shifts focus to listening for gist and detail in the context of current affairs, focusing on
Covid 19. Teacher will encourage Alberto to speak about how he feels and what impact the virus has
had on his life thus developing confidence in speaking English. The teacher will make use of an audio
clip to improve Alberto’s listening skills. The worksheet provided is to check the student’s
comprehension of the language.
