selected business more efficient, effective and successful. The organisation I
have chosen for this task is eBay.
Background of eBay: The company eBay Inc. is an American
multinational Internet consumer-to-consumer corporation, headquartered in San
Jose, California. It was founded by Pierre Omidyar in 1995, and became a notable
success story of the dot-com bubble; it is now a multi-billion dollar business with
operations localized in over thirty countries. The company manages eBay.com,
an online auction and shopping website in which people and businesses buy and
sell a broad variety of goods and services worldwide. In addition to its auction-
style selling’s, the website has since expanded to include "Buy It Now" standard
shopping; shopping by UPC, ISBN, or other kind of SKU (via Half.com); online
classified advertisements); online event ticket trading online money transfers
(via PayPal) and other services.
Effectiveness
EBay originally was an auction web that sold a variety of products,
however now they have expanded their website by adding even more
products (global), and they have also added new categories in their
website where customers do not have to just auction, but they can ‘Buy it
Now’. EBay has added the ‘Buy it now’ tab for sellers who have a fixed
price they want their items to be sold at instead of the long process of
auctioning. This is effective because customers are able to purchase
numerous amount of stock from eBay without having to wait for the
auctioning to finish and with the mind-set of knowing that will in fact
purchase the product as they have bought it and not having to outbid
anyone else. This attracts customers when browsing their website as
customers can browse through the site knowing that they can freely
purchase whatever they want.
Success
By early 2008, the eBay had expanded worldwide, counted hundreds of millions
of registered users, 15,000+ employees and revenues of almost $7.7 billion. On
April 18, 2012 eBay reported a 29% Q1 revenue increase to $3.3 billion
compared to their Q1 in 2011. Net income was reported to be at $570 million for
the quarter. This proves how successful and powerful eBay and also how loyal
the customers are to the site.
Effectiveness
EBayhas apps for customers using android/smart phones to access to their
website, this is effective as customers are able to stream online on their
website which will help them gain more customers coming in from all
directions. As a result the more customers that are visiting their website
