Perception Howcanourunderstandingofperceptionhelpusbecomemoreeffectivecommunicators? Perception is a process where we select, organize, and interpret information to make sense toourselves (Weintraub et al., 2015). Basically, everyone has a different perception of information basedon how they process the information relayed to them. Even answering this question will be slightlydifferentforourclasssinceweeachinterpretandorganizedthequestionindifferentways.Basedonthisinterpretation of perception, it can help us become more effective communicators by recognizing thefact that each person’s perception may be different from yours. This is handy in the nursing field whendealing with patients and staff members because you can adjust your communication accordingly torephaseorclarifyanypossiblemiscommunications.Thisisbeneficialtominimizeorpreventanyharmormalpracticetothe patient. Example Think of time when you interacted with someone from a different culture. Using thecommunicationmodel, howdidyourconversationevolve?Wasthereamiscommunication. Growing up as a military brat, I have gotten use to dealing with people from different culturesearly in life. However, the only time I really had an issue of miscommunication with someonefromadifferentculturewasonceandonsocialmedia. The conversationevolvedwhenIgaveanalternative perception on the subject matter in a social group. The subject matter was aboutexplaining lifestyles, choices, disabilities, race, religion, ect. My perception was that I willexplain to my children different topics as they arise. At the time my youngest children were 1and 3 years old. The response I received was not the best. Being a bad parent was not the worstthing I was called. I did take the time to respond to some of the people with there comments as Idid recognize that they did not quite understand what I was saying. After awhile most peoplewereabletounderstand whereI wascomingfrom. Change Whatcouldyouhavedonedifferently? In the case of the post, I could have not made a comment at all or I could have left those peoplefeelingupsetbecauseof theirperceptionof my statement. In the words of McLean, “To understand communication with others also requires self-knowledge”(McLean,2018).IfIdidnothavesomeunderstandingofcommunications withothers,I would not have had the confidence and knowledge about myself to go back and respond topeoplewho did notunderstandmy statement.
