Atom; simplest particle of matter
Molecule; more than 1 atom joined together
Element; all atoms of the same type
Mixture; different type of atom not chemically joined together
Compound; different type of atom bonded together
Isotopes; atoms of the same element with same number of protons but different numbers of
neutrons
Separation methods
1. Filtration
- Solid from liquid
- Filter paper
2. Evaporation
- Aqueous from liquid to obtain solid
- Evaporating dish + heat
3. Simple distillation
- Aqueous from liquid to obtain liquid
- Round bottom flask + heat + condenser
4. Pipette
- Immiscible liquid
5. Chromatography
- Analysis of mixture of soluble chemical substance
- different dyes have different affinities for different solution
- Rf factor; compare components of various samples
- Rf= distance to spot/ distance to solvent front
1. Draw pencil line 1cm from bottom and add spot of dyes along line
2. Place in water so line is not covered, then wait
3. Remove from water and calculate Rf
