Understanding and managing suicide and self-harm 1
, 💡 Key Points:
What is suicide and self-harm?
Defining suicide and self-harm is not straight forward. A lack of
standardised definitions or classification system hinders the progress
of the field of suicidology in terms of:
1. Risk assessment
2. Prevention efforts
3. Building a research base
Multiple terms are used to describe the same behaviours.
What is suicide?
Exploring suicide from a global perspective can be challenging. There
is no universally agreed standardised classification system for what
constitutes suicide.
WHO (2014) — the act of deliberately killing
oneself.
National Statistics definition of suicide includes:
All deaths from intentional self-harm for persons aged 10 and
over.
All deaths where the intent was undetermined for those aged 15
and over.
Important that reliable data about suicide is available as it is
commonly used to influence policy decisions — yet official statistics
often underestimate the “true” number.
What is self-harm? — current terminology
