Criminology Assignment
Technological Crime.
Technological crime is a crime that is committed online or that involves any ICT. Examples off this
would be: phishing, illegal downloading, hacking or even online abuse/bullying. People who commit
technological crimes tend to target vulnerable groups off elder people or sometimes younger people
as both don’t really know what they’re doing online, although, anyone who uses the internet can be
a victim off this crime. They target their victims using very smart methods and sometimes you won’t
see it coming, the offender can be anyone who uses the internet! Not many people are aware off
how many technological cases occur every single day as not many are reported; this is due to people
not seeing it as a big crime and just looking past it.
Phishing is an illegal crime where a person or group of people send emails, messages or call
individuals and try to take personal information including; name, number, address or in some cases
your bank card details. These criminals are very clever with the way they perform their crimes, you
would never see it coming. To make it easier for them they target elder people as they’re more
unaware off this and are more likely to give their details. Any person or group off people that
commit this offence are looking to spend 2-10 years in prison or a fine up to £1000.
Many people illegally download without realising how much off a crime it is. Illegally downloading
just one film can get you up to 5 years in prison and up to a £50,000 fine, you may think
downloading just one series is ok, however it’s not and it’s an illegal offence that may not be taken
lightly.
Hacking is an illegal crime and won’t swept under the rug as you could get up to life in prison. This is
the worst conviction you could get, all depending on the crime you commit, you could also get as
little as just community sentence. This is because you’re intentionally trying to get someone’s details
or trying to impersonate them by hacking into there accounts, which is a serious crime.
Online abuse or bullying is a criminal offence and you can be put in prison, this is also deviance as it’s
not normal to bully somebody. People that online bully usually don’t have a specific audience they
target, howeve, it is normally somebody you know.
Hacker Alex Bessell
Alex Bessell was a computer hacker that was put in prison for 2 years for committing thousands off
cyber crimes. Alex was from Liverpool and was just a typical 21 year old man, showing the offender
could be anyone that has access to the internet. His home was searched and his computer was
found and seized, on his computer there were around about 750 names and passwords for multiple
infected computers. This shows that he hacked anyone he could, not thinking about their age, who
they are or where they’re from, showing even you could be a victim off this crime. He also had
control of around 9,000 ‘bots’ and had control over computers without any off the owners
knowledge, he used the ‘bots’ to make attacks on websites such as: Pokemon, Skype and Google.
This was a very public case as there were a lot off news articles made about it and every update was
publicised. Alex was put into jail for 2 years for this criminal offence in 2018 and is now out and
carrying on with his life.
Overall, Technological Crimes are mainly illegal crimes that u can be put away for and anyone that
has access to the internet can be a victim, regardless of your age.
