English book review
By: Floren Bout (V4B)
Book title: The Maze Runner
Author: James Dashner (Austell, born November 26 in 1972) is an American author
of speculative fiction, primarily series for young adults. He is mostly famous because
of the series: The Maze Runner. His 2008 novel The Journal of Curious Letters was
the annual Borders Original Voices picks.
Year of publication: 2009
Number of pages: 375

The plot
When the 16-year-old Thomas wakes up surrounded by darkness, the only thing he
remembers is his name. He finds out he is in some sort of lift and when the lift stops,
someone opens it and Thomas is surrounded by boys whose have also lost their
memories. He has to start a new life in what’s called the Glade, a place that is
surrounded by massive stone walls. Soon he finds out that there’s a maze behind the
walls. The maze is the only way out, but no one’s ever made it trough alive.
Then a girl arrives. The first girl ever. And she delivers a terrifying message.

The setting
At the end of the book you find out that the book takes place in the future. You find
out it’s the end of the world and the world hasn’t ended yet. You also see a lot of
technology that we don’t have now. The book takes place in the Glade and in the
maze.

The theme
The universal idea of the book is the desire for freedom. The whole book is about
finding the way out of the maze.

The protagonist
The main character is Thomas. He is a 16-year-old boy who end up in the Glade. He
remembers only his name. And he does everything he can to find the way out of the
maze.

You and the main character
I can relate to the main character, he has almost the same age as me and I
understand the things he does and says. I can’t imagine how it would be to end up in
the Glade, but I would definitely be as scared as him. I however wouldn’t do all the
things he did, he is much braver than me.

Your opinion
I think the book was very exciting, you were constantly wondering what was going to
happen next. At the beginning you have, just like the main character, no idea where
he is and is going on there. You find out more and more the further you read. And
you get surprised all the time.
I also think the book was very thrilling, in the maze there are these sort of monsters,
they call them grievers, and they can sting you and then you ‘turn’, you get sick and
then you’ll be in a lot of pain. When Thomas and his friends are in the maze, it’s
scary because they can get stung by a griever. You also have no clue why the boys
are in the maze and you have no idea who put them in there, so that’s scary too.
