Introduction
Organization and Use of this Handbook
The handbook concerns:
- all obligatory anatomical readings in the chapters of Purves et al.
- the interactive neuroanatomical atlas Sylvius.
Stations examination
Readings for the Station Exam:
This handbook (questions and assignments) with the indicated anatomical figures and
text book fragments from Purves et al.
At the end of each of the three sections is a list of items concerning structures and/or concepts
that you should be familiar with: name, location and most important functions must be
known.
Answers to the Handbook questions will be published on Canvas.
Human brain e-practical
After completing this Handbook we will perform a digital practicum that covers some
important addition aspects in preparation for the exam. Please understand that it is essential to
have completed this Handbook prior to the e-practicum. You should be familiar with the
neuroanatomical terminology otherwise you are unable to perform the practical assignments.
What you need for the practical, and how it will be organized:
Before the online practicum you will be requested to vision the file, which will be
uploaded on Canvas;
Read the instructions reported in the introduction;
Try to answer all the questions and note apart possible doubts and assignments you
find it difficult;
During the online practicum you will be assigned to small group breakout-rooms
where together with your colleagues you can discuss these aspects;
A plenary session at the end of the online practicum will be dedicated to provide you
with the solution of the different assignments.
Sylvius
Sylvius is an interactive human brain atlas that we use to study human neuroanatomy. Many
of the figures in the text book of Purves are included in the software. Pictures of real brain
sections are available on the Anatomy website: http://www.anatomie-amsterdam.nl/ and
throughout this Handbook we will refer you to the Anatomy website. Select from the main
page: “hersenen van de mens” and/or “VUmc Academie Zenuwstelsel”.
