I predicted this exam question before the 2022 exam. It is very similar to question 1 in the History 2022 exam paper (1H), and received a 17/20. It covers multiple points from the Britain transformed textbook, and provides strong analysis with sustained judgement.

To what extent was the liberal decline of 1918-1929 the result
of the actions of David Lloyd George?

It is partially accurate to say that the actions of Lloyd George triggered
the Liberal decline as the scandal of him selling knighthoods and
peerages led to him losing in the 1922 election. The conservative
dominance in the coalition was also a hugely significant reason why
there was a decline in the liberal party. Due to Lloyd George’s actions
and scandals the conservatives decided to end the coalition which
ultimately caused the liberal’s decline. The rise in the Labour party as
the second most popular party as the second most popular party was
the reason why the Liberals didn’t gain much popularity again after
their downfall. The popularity of the Labour party was partially caused
by the Representation of the People’s Act of 1918 which largely
expanded the franchise. There was also an existing strain on the Liberal
government as the Home Role issue in Ireland, the women’s suffrage
movement and the experience of war consequently weakened the
Liberal party and further contributed to their downfall.

The actions of David Lloyd George triggered the downfall of the Liberal
party as they revisited a large scandal in 1922 which led to the
conservatives abandoning their coalition with the Liberals. This led to
their downfall as the conservatives dominated the coalition as they
were far more popular. This left the Liberals in a weak position and the
rise of the Labour party solidified the sustained, long-term decline of
the Liberal party. In 1922, it was revealed that Lloyd George had sold
1500 knighthoods and nearly 100 peerages. When some newspapers
tried to report it, Lloyd George gave even more titles away for reporters
to turn a blind eye to the scandal. This was a shocking scandal and led
to the conservative party holding a secret meeting at the Carlton club; a
private members club used by political elites in London where it was
decided to abandon the coalition with the Liberals. In the 1918 election
