CHL2601 Assignment 14 S2 2022

CHILDREN’S LITERATURE
CHL2601
ASSESSMENT 14

Question 1
In the previous assessments you have demonstrated that you are able to select age-
appropriate children’s literature to use with a specific purpose in mind. In this assessment you
are required to select children’s literature with themes that address personal or social
challenges.
Select one of the following challenges to answer this question:
• Personal challenge: death of a loved one (or a pet)
Or
• Social challenge: bullying

1.1 Select a children’s story that aims to address the challenge you have selected. Provide the
title and author of the book. The book must be appropriate for children between 5 to 9 years
of age.
Selected the following challenge and children’s story to address the challenge:

… Social challenge: bullying

… “Sibo beats the bully” by Ginny Stone.

1.2 Explain why you chose this specific story with reference to:
• The relevance of the theme for the identified age group
South Africa has the highest incidence of bullying according to PIRLS 2016 survey. In many
reported incidence of bullying in South African schools, learners are just by-standers taking
pictures instead of assisting the learner being bullied and in some instances even physically.
But Sibo and her friends did the right thing in selected story. Bullying is aggressive behaviour
that is intentional and that involves an imbalance of power or strength.

• Why learners will be able to relate to the characters in the story

, CHL2601 Assignment 14 S2 2022

In the story, Alex is the bullied small boy just like what is often happening in our schools where
the weak are picked up for bullying

• How learners will be able to use the plot in relation to their own personal circumstances
Instead of being by-standers watching someone being bullied the story reveals how to respond
in such cases. Sibo and her friends rescued Alex, comforted him, advised him to tell an adult
about it and also invited Alex to join their group of friends and sit with them at break time. Which
is exactly what learners are supposed to do instead of cheering and taking pictures posting on
social media.

• The relevance of the setting
Teaches to be kind. If you see someone being bullied say or do something instead of being a
cheering by-stander like exactly what is happening in schools currently.

• The appropriateness of the style of the book
It appeals to a particular age group 5 to nine year old. Is of the right length, have the right
vocabulary, and contain the level of content kids are emotionally ready for. Story is relatable to
learners and bullying incidences in schools.

1.3 Explain how you would read the story to learners by focusing on your steps:
• Before reading
