class through his business. So that is why occasionally he has

“social superior”(As told by the stage directions).

• Priestley surprises the Audience when Birling delivers his speech to
his family during the engagement meal that does not focus on his
love for his daughter or his fondness for his future son in law instea
Centers around his opinion on the economic future of the countr
and failure of nearby countries.
• This is an example of preistly presenting Mr Birling as a flawed,
misled and a pompous man.
• He refers to himself as a “Hard -headed businessman” and then
moments later as “ Hard headed practical man of business”
• This repetition emphasises how mr Birling’s self perception is entir
built upon how he sees himself in terms of work and money.
