English Language Paper 1:

1hr 45mins: You have to read 1 fiction extract and answer 5 questions.
Section A – Reading – 1 hour
Question 1 – List 4 things... (5mins)
1. Read the question
2. Highlight key words in the question
3. Read the lines stated in the question (draw a box around the lines)
4. In full sentences, answer the question (copy)

Question 2 – Analyse how the writer uses language. (15mins)
1. Read the question and highlight the keywords
2. Read the lines stated in the question (draw a box around the lines)
3. Highlight what the question is asking you to look for (description of
a character. How the character feels etc.)
4. Identify the language devices (verbs, adjectives, nouns, metaphors,
similes etc.)
5. 2 X PEA Paragraphs

Question 3 – Analyse how writers use structure. (15mins)
1. Read the question and highlight the keywords
2. Look at the start and the end of the extract, how do they create
tension?
3. Find ACEPROFIT/FIRST devices at the start and end. How do they
make the writing interesting?
4. Mention how they make the reader feel
5. 2/3 X PEE Paragraphs

Question 4 – Critical opinion of the text – to what extent do you agree?
(25mins)
1. Read the question and highlight the keywords
2. Read the lines stated in the question (draw a box around the lines)
3. What do you think? Do you agree or disagree? Why?
4. Find evidence that supports your opinion and highlight it
5. Write 3/4 PEE paragraphs

Section B – Writing – 45 minutes
Question 5 – Either....
