INTRO AND SO ON

False confessions have become increasingly common within the crime sector over the past few
decades. According to the National Registry of Exonerations (2019) 81% of people with mental
illness or intellectual disabilities offered false confession when they were accused of homicide.
At the forefront of false confessions is police interrogation. After establishing the Police and
Criminal Evidence (PACE) Act in 1984 which abolished physical coercion and deemed it
unacceptable from a human rights perspective, it was stated that the arrest, detaining,
interviewing and safeguarding would all be recorded to ensure appropriate interrogation
techniques were carried out and reduce risk of false confessions (Gavin, 2019) which is a waste
