Provide 6 characteristics of (or ‘rules’ for) a good title for a research article or a research report. [6 marks]
1. It is short; between 5 to 10 words.
2. Conveys the main focus points of the research.
3. Is not too brief (or ambiguous) or too in-depth (using words such as research, investigation, etc)
4. It states the main points, or the gist of the research (Terre Blanche, Durrheim, & Painter, 2006).
5. It contains information on the population or the sample studied – from tutorial letter 104 (University Of
South Africa , 2022).
6. It should be clear and concise – from tutorial letter 104 (University Of South Africa , 2022)
From the Terre Blanche textbook:
THE TITLE
The title should convey the gist of your research. It should not be too lengthy (five or ten words
should suffice”.
“Leave out words like ‘study’, ‘investigation’ and ‘research’.
‘…the title should not be so brief that is becomes obscure”.
“After reading the title of an article, the reader should have a fair idea of the articles main focus.”
“It can also be useful to begin a title with a short catchy phrase.”
(Terre Blanche, Durrheim, & Painter, 2006, p. 122)
