Analyse the information in the class summary. What are your learners’ strengths and weaknesses?
(max. 100 words).
This is a class of 6 students of mixed nationality, age, and ability undertaking Academic IELTS. I have identified from the
analysis of band scores that the overall class strength is reading. There are mixed weaknesses in the class over the 3 other
skills but on average it appears that speaking and listening are the weak skills of the majority. I have noted that Delphine
displays a low band score in her writing skill and will address this with her individually. There are a variety of reasons for
students taking the IELTS, but certain commonalities exist e.g. work
Which two skills have you chosen to teach in this lesson? Why? (minimum 150 words)
I have chosen to focus on the skills of listening and speaking in this lesson. This choice was made upon analysis of the
class summary, whereby analysis shows that the class requires the most improvement in these areas. In preparation of the
lesson plan both skills overlap. Activities can be made to practice both these skills simultaneously. Students will be more
engaged in lessons involving more than one skill, in fact, it would be quite difficult, if not impossible to produce a lesson
focusing solely on one skill. The listening skill is necessary for the IELTS speaking test, where the students will have to
listen to and respond to the examiner’s questions. To increase their average band score, the students require an
improvement of 1 or 1.5 in their speaking and listening bands. These skills are essential to enable students to converse
fluently in English. Lesson tasks can be produced to mimic those of the official IELTS exam.

Which lesson topic have you chosen? Why? (minimum 100 words)
I have chosen the IELTS topic WORK for this lesson. I assume that all students will have a common interest in this area.
Two students state they `want to improve job prospects` as their reason for choosing to do IELTS, one (Ana) specifically
wants to work as a nurse and it can be assumed that the others will also intend to work after or during studying or on
moving abroad. On researching past IELTS papers I found this to be quite a common topic both in listening and speaking
skills tests and therefore anticipate there will be relevant IELTS materials to use. There is a wide variety of vocabulary,
useful phrases, and idioms that can be taught and used on this topic. The chosen podcast resource includes some medical
vocabulary that may be of use to Ana.
Lesson Aims: Lesson Outcomes:
By the end of the lesson, students will be better able to… By the end of the lesson, students will have…
