Aim:
The major goal of this experiment was to collect data using various equipment in order to
create cooling curves and to utilise cooling curves to determine the cooling rate of various
substances.
Calibration of the digital thermometer:
By submerging the digital thermometer in ice water and recording the temperature, it was
calibrated. This was then done twice more to get three readings in order to calculate an
average. The digital thermometer was then immersed in boiling water three times so that we
could calculate an average.
Results:
Calibration of the spirit thermometer:
The spirit thermometer was initially placed in ice water and the temperature was recorded to
calibrate it. This was repeated twice more, giving us three readings from which to calculate
an average. The spirit thermometer was then placed in boiling water, and three readings were
taken, just like with the ice water, so we could take an average. We compared the data to the
digital thermometer to see which one would have been the best to use.
