MATH 114N Test Review Guide Lee Koratich Class, To help with the Unit 1 Review (which is quite difficult for many students), I have provided the following explanation of each problem on the Review. Please know that the questions on your Review may have different numbers, but the concept is the same as the following. Remember, the “^” indicates an exponent. I hope this helps! To begin, remember that the greatest common factor (GCF) may consist of a number and/or a variable. The GCF of the coefficients (numbers) is the largest number that divides into each coefficient. The GCF of the variable(s) is the variable with the smallest exponent that appears on a variable that is in every term. #1) Find the greatest common factor (GCF) of: 16x and 36 The coefficients in this problem are “16” and “36.” The largest number that divides them both is “4.” The variable “x” does not appear in both terms, so it is not part of the GCF. Thus, the GCF is: 4 #2) Complete the factoring: 5y + 30 = 5( ) Since “5” is the GCF, we factor it out and write it in front of the ( ). We then find what ”remains” in each of the original terms. We find this by dividing the coefficient by the number part of the GCF for each term. 5y + 30 = 5( y + 6 )
