Effective communication is vital within all health and social settings as it guarantees that every service users’
needs are met. It also helps to develop positive relationships between service users and professionals,
making it easier to understand and meet their needs. Most communication in these settings are interpersonal
meaning service professionals and users discuss issues face to face. However, it is becoming more popular
to communicate by telephone, text or email. But when communication occurs there are different approaches
used to ensure it is effective including, humanistic, behavioural, cognitive, psychoanalytical and social.
For Martin, a humanist approach to communication is beneficial as it uses a positive manner of thoughts and
actions, which shows respect and trust between both Martin and his GP (for example.) Plus, this approach
means that Martin is given a variety of choices that can help him change his life beneficially. However, one
weakness of the humanist approach is that it relies on good communication skills and uses complicated terms
or technical jargon, which may be a challenge for Martin. This is because he has difficulties reading complex
words and prefers simplified vocabulary so that he can understand.
For Nusrat a behavioural approach for communication is extremely beneficial, this is because the approach
doesn’t rely communication skills therefore it would be suitable for service users of all ages and abilities as
