Summary Pathophysiology Herniated Disc
Pathophysiology Herniated disc Herniated disc is the displacement of intervertebral disc material outside of the disc space. Disc material or nucleus pulposus that pushes into a nerve root provokes inflammation that causes the back pain that patients may experience. “Low back pain and leg pain are common symptoms. Two thirds of adults have back pain at some time in their lives, and approximately 10% of adults report back pain that has spread to below the knees within the previous 3 months”, (Demayo & Mirza, 2016, p.163). Sciatica and radiculopathy can be caused by herniated disc. Treatment of a herniated disc include oral medications, physical therapy with possible steroid injection. The last option would be surgery
