Evaluating the Recruitment and Relection Process of
a Large Business
Learning Aim A

Chosen Business, Tesco PLC
TESCO PLC is a global supermarket and general merchandise
retailer based in the United Kingdom. It is the world's third
largest retailer. The company's scope of operations is local,
national, and international, with locations ranging from next to
your local school to Poland and the Czech Republic. Tesco has
grown into 13 countries outside of the United Kingdom, as well
as emerging sectors including in-store retailing and financial
services. Tesco plc is considered a major company since it
employs over 492,000 people (2019).

P1: Explain how a large business recruits and selects giving reasons
for their process
Chosen Business – Tesco PLC

Reasons for Recruitment
Tesco aims at ensuring that all positions work together in
pursuit of its business goals. It must ensure at the right time
that it has the correct number of people in the right positions.
The method of recruiting allows companies to hire the workers
they need to perform those tasks. These may need to be hired
to replace workers leaving or growing, or because the company
requires employees with specific skills.
The business is growing: If sales and customer numbers
increase, the company would need more staff to support the
manufacture and production of more goods. This means that
the company must recruit. Local (to assist warehouses),
national (to support public relations) and foreign employees

, may be required (to help with relationships with other
countries).
Vacancies caused by leavers/staff turnover: this may be
because the staff might get a higher pay elsewhere or because
of personal reasons.
Staff are being internally promoted: An employee being
promoted could result in the company having to hire someone
else to fill the unoccupied role.
Seasonal fluctuations lead to a need for temporary staff: Tesco
will have to hire some temporary for the many events that
happen during the year such as, festivals or religious holidays.
An example could be Christmas, since that is one of the busiest
time of the year for Tesco so they will need more staff to keep
up with the demand.

Methods they use for recruiting:
 Online Application – In order to apply for an open position
at Tesco, the applicants would first be required to create
Tesco Underwriting Profile. Here they can create a profile
with one of their online accounts, such as Facebook,
Google+ or Linked-in or if they prefer, set one up from
scratch. After their profile has been created, They are able
to save it and log into it at any time in order to check their
application process.

After creating an account, it should take about 5 – 10
minutes for the applicant’s application process and it will
ask them to upload a current CV and an optional cover
letter. They can also find a form for equal opportunity,
which is an optional to fill, but Tesco urges them to fill this
in as they care about being an equal opportunities
employer.

Once the applications have been submitted, someone
from the recruiting departments will review their CV,
qualifications, and their experience. They will always be
