Pensions have consistently played a part in how many retired Americans continue to live out their “Golden Years” after their working careers have come to an end. In many cultures, the responsibi lity falls to the younger generations to care for their elderly. Our culture has a slightly different approach. While the other outlooks remain noble, we strive to maintain our independence even in our twilight years. We will show how pensions have played this role by looking at the different types of pensions, the role of the actuary, the benefits of pensions, the economic effect of pensions, how underfunded pensions have affected us, and how the Governmental Accounting Standards Board has affected the financial reporting for pensions.
