- Chromatography experiment set up:
- Draw a pencil line on chromatography paper (so that it doesn’t wash
off)
- Place a dot of samples on the pencil line
- Place the end of the chromatography paper in solvent - making sure
that the water line is below the sample line (otherwise the sample will
just wash off)
- When the water has reached the top of the paper, remove it and
leave it to dry

- Chromatograms will show the composition of a mixture as the different
coloured substances (components) will spread apart as they will have
different solubilities so will travel at different rates
- A pure substance will only produce one spot on the chromatogram during
paper chromatography
- In the diagram shown, red, blue and yellow are three pure substances, whilst
the sample on the left is a mixture of all three
