Explain one way in which ideas about the cause of disease and illness were similar in the 14 th
and 17th centuries?

1) One way in which ideas about the cause of disease and illness were similar in the 14 th and
17th century was due to miasma. This is evident by the fact that during the Middle ages
miasma was one of the causative factors for the black death in 1348. People believe that bad
smell came from earthquakes and volcanoes and cause the disease. Whereas in the 17 th
century miasma was the causative factor for the great plague in 1665. In this, smell was
trapped in frozen rubbish and released in the summer times when the times were warmer,
this was also coincided with the epidemic.

Explain one way in which people’s reactions to the plague were similar in the 14th and 17th
centuries?

2) In both the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries people’s reactions to the plague were
similar in many ways. One of the main ways people’s reactions were similar was that they
both believed it was due to God’s punishment. They both fasted and used prayer. This shows
a similarity between the two eras’ as it shows that during these time periods both sets of
medical knowledge were dominated by the church. Overall this also shows a lack of progress
of medicine as from the C14th medical ideas and reactions had not progressed or moved
forward.

and 17th centuries?

3) 0ne way in which the approaches to the treatment of disease were different in the 13 th and
17th century is people looked for chemical cure. This is because in the 13 th century, herbal
remedies (such as reddish and saffron) would cure the diseases that came from the country
and so the appearance of new remedies opened up a huge number of new possibilities for
treatments and others. However, in the 17 th century, new remedies started to appear in the
new world in which we started using chemical compounds. One example is antimony
potassium tartrate which cured the lung. This meant that as it cured the French king, it was
bound to get popular, and people didn’t rely on bloodletting or herbs as much anyone.
Therefore, this is one reason.

4) One way in which ideas about the treatment of disease were different in the 17th century
from ideas in the 13th century is the expansion of availability of materials. This is because in
the 13th century, many people were treated with herbal remedies. These were usually made
with local plants and herbs such as mint and camomile. Recipes for these included theriaca,
a popular remedy. Whereas, in the 17 th century, more materials were available due to
increased overseas trading. New ingredients included nutmeg and cinnamon. There were
also experiments with chemical cures, for example, the use of mercury to treat syphilis.
