Hazards
1. Ethanol
2. Sodium hydroxide solution
3. Phenol
4. Benzoyl chloride
5. Bags/coats
6. Chairs
7. Glassware
8. Bunsen burner

Risk
1. Ethanol poses a risk as it is highly flammable. This risk is that the liquid may
catch fire/ it is explosive. (When preparing the ethanal work within a fume
cupboard).
2. Sodium hydroxide solution is corrosive so can cause severe burns to the contact
area and inhalation of the solution can be toxic.
3. Phenol poses a risk to all individuals as it is toxic by ingestion and skin
absorption. The risk is if the phenol gets in contact with the skin as it can cause
severe burns.
4. Benzoyl chloride poses a risk as it is Water-Reactive and Air-Reactive, and can
cause irritation to eyes, nose, throat and cause burning and irritation.
5. Bags/ Coats poses a risk as individuals may trip over the bags in the
classroom/laboratory which could lead to the hazardous solutions being spilled
into the eyes and skin of fellow classmates.
6. Chairs pose a risk as if a solution is spilled and an individual is sitting down they
will not have sufficient time to move away from it.
7. Glassware may smash, which increases the risk in injury for individuals.
8. There is a risk of fire or burns caused by the Bunsen burner flame.
