Tackling health inequalities
Fair society, healthy lives (Marmot Review 2010)
●Giving children the best start in life - Health visitors
play a key role by carrying out assessments on
speech, ability to play etc
●Enable us all to maximise our capabilities, self care
is vital, healthy lifestyle can help with physical and
mental health
●Fair employment - at the moment with Covid
there is a lot of uncertainty about employment, so
this is quite relevant. Adaptability is important
because the future of so many jobs is not certain.
●A healthy standard of living is crucial for overall
wellbeing
●It is important to think about the social conditions
in which we live and work (including employment,
housing, services available - due to Covid many
services are less easy to access)
●Healthy & sustainable communities

Social Determinants of Health (Marmot 2005)
●Poverty and income - due to the pandemic this is
very uncertain people are trying to manage this but it
is having an effect on mental health
●Social exclusion - many services set up to help deal
with this problem have been shut down. So we need
to think about how we can provide these services in
the midst of the pandemic.
●Health services - as above more difficult to access
certain services which can have a detrimental effect
○As a social worker we need to be aware of how
services are limited so we can assist service users
access whatever service is available
●Community support networks are limited too,
these are often very helpful for some vulnerable
people (e.g. elderly) But restrictions like lockdown
have exacerbated problems of isolation. Important to
think about health behaviors e.g hugs for family
members can risk spreading the virus to the most
vulnerable
