T: So, before we start reading the article about Summer Avery, we will have a look at some
new vocabulary words. I will define the words by showing you some pictures or explaining
in context and you will try guess. Please listen carefully and don’t forget to write down the
new vocabulary words in your vocabulary book.
Everyone, ready?
C: Yes!
T: Great! Let’s start with the first one.

(1st vocabulary item “determined”)
T: Have you ever wanted to do something so much that you sticked to an action plan and
overcome any difficulties in your way to achieve your goal? Anyone?

- The whole class is quiet and thinking...
T: Okay, I will tell you a real story about Sertab Erener! You all know her, right?
C: Yes, of course!
S1: She is a very famous singer.
T: Exactly. She released so many albums and gave so many concerts. She even won the
Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 when she represented Turkey. She wasn’t always as
successful as now though. She was kicked out of university as they said she wasn’t good
enough. But after all, Sertab didn’t let all these bad comments ruin her dream. She studied
so hard, she believed in herself and here we go! She is such a great singer now and has a
beautiful voice. So, how do we call a person like Sertab Erener?
S2: Ambitious?
T: Good try Selin but it’s a different word. Anyone?
S3: Determined?
T: Yes, well done Melis! Can you repeat that again please so everyone can hear?
